Product List
Type 2 Gravel
It is a well-draining material manufactured from Pit Run Gravel. It is reduced to a size of 3 ¼” (80mm). Its primary uses are for farm roads, soft spots in driveways, backfill around foundations, and as a road base. It compacts very well and is typically covered with Type 1 Gravel. This product should be applied in 6” – 8” layers.
Rip Rap
This is a cubical rock with at least 3 flat surfaces. It is ideal for short retaining walls and driveway culvert ends as it is easily stackable. It “locks” into place whether hand laid or machine placed; great for the prevention of erosion and in areas with excessive water run-off during heavy rain and melting snow.
Compost
This is a mixture of decayed or decaying organic matter that is used to fertilize soil. Not only will compost improve soils structure but also provides nutrients to soil such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Unlike most inorganic fertilizers, compost functions as a slow-release store of nutrients, so that the nutrients are available as the plants require them instead of in one intense flush. Compost also provides a wide range of important micronutrients not found in commercial fertilizers.
Fill
Also known as a Back Sand. This is an unscreened material, ranging in size, extracted directly from a bank. It is primarily used for fill to build up areas where grades are lower than the finished grade, or to backfill around foundations.
Crusher Fines
This material ranges in sizes up to a maximum of 3/8”. Due to it compacting well it is ideal for under floor slabs, fine grade, and concrete pouring preparation. It is also a great product for pipe bedding, top dressings for walkways and driveways, as well as underneath above-ground pools.
Pit Run Gravel
It is a well-draining material that is extracted from a bank without manufacturing. It is mainly used for driveways or in extremely soft areas. It can range in size from 6” to 12”. Not recommended for residential home usage as it can be extremely hard to level and requires machinery to do so. For stability in soft areas and to cover larger rock, it is recommended to be put on in layers at least 1” in depth.
Screened Sand
We have many different qualities of sand, thanks to the natural sand deposits on the Annapolis Valley floor that can be used for many different purposes such as traction on icy roads, septic systems, concrete production, asphalt paving, pipe bedding, under floor slabs, backfilling foundations in heavy soiled areas in order to lighten the pressure on concrete walls, drainage and much more. Our sand is mixed with a small amount of topsoil in order to lighten soil for aeration to handle wet conditions.
Washed Mortar Sand
This is a very fine, clean material mainly used for mixing mortar for masonry work. It can also be used under liners for above ground pools, children’s sand boxes, and for beach sand on waterfront properties that may have a rocky beach area. Unwashed Mortar Sand is also available and is useful for bedding for underground electrical wire and pipe and can also be used for bedding cattle.
Blue Crusher Dust
This material is the bi-product of crushed clearstone. Labeled “Blue” exclusively by Howard Little due to the bluish-grey color it turns when washed by rain. This product compacts very well and is primarily used for walkways, under floor slabs, and under above-ground swimming pools. The size varies from dust up to 3/8”. This is a great product but will track into your home if wet when you walk on it.
Red Bark Mulch
This product typically comes from block ends at mill yards where lumber is cut to proper length. The blocks are ground, sometimes with cedar creating a cedar aroma. The ground wood is passed through a red coloring process which creates a cosmetically pleasing landscape material. This product is also more stable on the ground than regular bark mulch so is ideal for dressing up slopes.
Dark Bark Mulch
A bi-product of our provincial lumber mills this product is great for retaining moisture around trees and plants. Bark mulch used for landscaping makes for a great looking contrast with green lawns. If the bark is placed over landscaping fabric it will also help prevent the growth of weeds close to the trunks of trees and bushes.
Black Bark Mulch
Great moisture-retention and aesthetically pleasing landscaping material although the advantage of the black dyed mulch is that it looks freshly applied, as if recently hosed down, with season-long color that won’t fade to gray. It’s dark, the rich color looks great under shrubs & trees highlighting the plants above it.
Screened Topsoil
It is a material screened to reduce it to a maximum size of ¾”. Its primary use is for growing grass, lawn work, septic disposal bed covering, and for filling plant pots. This material should be applied in 1” – 6” layers depending upon the purpose. It must be a minimum of 4” in depth for growing grass.
3/8” Pea Stone
This product comes from the screening of sand through a series of screens separating the fine, medium and coarse materials. The product is 3/8” – 5/8” in size and is smooth like river stone. It makes an ideal base for playground equipment but is not recommended for walkways as it does not compact well due to its smooth surface.
1"Ornamental Granite
Derived from large blasted granite deposits, it is crushed and the fines are screened off leaving an average size of ¾” – 1 1/8”. This material is pinkish red in color and is cosmetically appealing when placed around trees and shrubbery as well as other landscaping purposes.
3/8”- 5/8” Clearstone
Manufactured by crushing larger rock to reduce it in size to 3/8” -5/8”; due to its size it is easily managed by hand. Primarily used for drainage work, under floors, basements, as well as backfilling against walls and under swimming pools. This product is NOT recommended for driveways as it is a loose material and does not compact well.
Type 1 (Class A) Gravel
This material is manufactured from crushed Pit Run Gravel reducing it to a maximum size of 20mm or ¾”. Its primary uses are top dressing for roadways, parking areas, and driveways as it tends to compact and drain very well. It is recommended that this product is applied in 2” – 6” layers. It can be placed to fine grade with a dozer or grader due to its size and can also be used for backfill around swimming pools and much more.
3/4“ Blue Clearstone (unwashed)
This product is created from a deposit of Quartzite, which is blasted to a size ranging from 6”- 24”, then crushed to 3/4”. The fines are screened off leaving a product ranging from 5/8” – ¾” which is ideal for drainage purposes and can be used in the mixing of concrete also. After being washed (by a mechanical system or rainfall) this material becomes very clean. This product is NOT recommended for driveways as it does not compact well and can be very hard to drive a bicycle on and/or push a stroller over.
3/8”- 5/8” Crushed Granite
This material is similar to Pea Stone with the exception of having a rougher surface due to being derived from granite rather than sand. It is an excellent product for walkways, and gardens as it locks together and lies nicely on the ground. It has many other uses such as edging around homes and under eaves to prevent mud from staining concrete walls or siding.
½”-1 ½” Clearstone (unwashed or washed available)
This product is created from a deposit of Quartzite, which is blasted to a size ranging from 6”- 24”, then crushed to 3/4”. The fines are screened off leaving a product ranging from 5/8” – ¾” which is ideal for drainage purposes and can be used in the mixing of concrete also. After being washed (by a mechanical system or rainfall) this material becomes very clean. This product is NOT recommended for driveways as it does not compact well and can be very hard to drive a bicycle on and/or push a stroller over.
Type 1 Prospect (fine slate)
This product is manufactured by crushing slate to a maximum size of 1 1/8”. Its primary use is as a top dressing on driveways. It is especially ideal for sloped driveways as it compacts very well and does not wash away. Snow removal is easier also as the slate lays flat creating a hard, smooth surface. This material is a bluish-grey color once washed by the rain.
Type 2 Prospect (4” Minus)
This material is manufactured by crushing slate to a maximum size of 4” (100mm). It is primarily used as a base material for driveways/parking lots with a soft sub-base as well as to dry up soft areas in roadways. It makes an extremely good base for building footings and driveways when applied in a 6” – 8” layer then graded and compacted.
Oversized Landscaping Stones (Natural Stone)
These stones come in a wide variety of sizes and are available in stone or slate. They are typically used for stepping stones, walkways, walls, filling ditches and other various landscaping projects.
